ONS responds to emerging challenges and needs by developing projects and activities in the following areas:
- Advocacy
We maintain a relationship with the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture, the Province of Nova Scotia via the Department of Agriculture to ensure Certified Organic producers and processors are at the table when decisions are being that affects the future of our farms and businesses. - Policy Development
Federal and provincial agricultural policies must evolve to meet the demands of the climate crisis. Nova Scotia’s Certified Organic producers and processors have been working on solutions for decades and have valuable input for the policy development process. - Marketing & Promotion
Generally speaking, authentic organic agriculture is poorly understood by the public. ONS aims to create a consistent awareness of who we are, what we do and how that is valuable to those who buy our products and support our businesses. - Community Building
Organic farms produce nutritious food for our communities to eat. There is no better way to build relationships than over a meal. Food ties us all together. Organic businesses have a strong sense of ethics and a desire to build more healthy and resilient communities. - Education
Through our strategic partnerships, we develop opportunities for producers, processors and the public to learn more about what authentic Certified Organic practices mean. - Research
Certified Organic agricultural practices are not relics of the past. Although some tried and tested practices are employed on Certified Organic farms, research into innovative technologies and practices that respect the complexity and locality of agro-ecological systems is critical for future sustainability on our farms and our communities.
